Expressing Emotions
Expressing emotions is easier for some than others. Yet our emotions hold the key to movement in our lives. If it feels right in our senses, we move ahead more readily. However, our past experiences can hold us back to protect us from old patterns built on beliefs that we may not be conscious of, or formed from very difficult experiences.
Our fears
Emotions are very powerful and important. They are so often difficult to express in full integrity for fear of how they will be received. As our nature is to find the path of least resistance to being accepted and loved, so we fit that agenda rather than express ourselves fully. Some will express more fully than others can cope with, which is another challenge to being accepted and loved if you do express emotions.
Perceptions
We all know we can look at the same scene and ‘see’ something very different. Looking behind this can be useful. Being able to express ourselves is a powerful healing and nurturing opportunity. Have you been able to experience that in an open and safe environment, created between people who are genuinely invested in integrity? How often do we perceive a situation and form a belief so strong that it influences our actions and reactions, without finding out more though real communication?
What would a Safe Space to Communicate Look Like?
I would invite you to consider what you would want in a safe space of communication between you and your partner, or significant other. How often do you second guess what the other is thinking or believing? Can you really openly ask to find out and really listen, whilst gently accepting that you may not hear what you want to hear ? There are, however, extremes which are beyond the remit of this article. Here I am referring to our every day relationships and interactions that make our experience of life deeper and more fulfilling, together.
I am chuckling, as I hear, ‘Men are on a different planet to women!” (vice versa!!). Indeed, and that is why I am writing. There is a bridge in understanding to be built, allowing expression and real communication, so to allow for the differing requirements is necessary. Being able to realise our own patterns, and reactions to being able to do this is the place to start. Then, when perceptions are identified the next steps can be seen. It all starts inside ourselves. Listen with love and you will find a way that feels better. Allow the sensitivity to be acknowledged, but look to the roots if you are able. Know that emotions are signposts for new choices, new action, new understanding. You will know…
